The curriculum at Oakwood Academy is Core Knowledge which is based on some of the ideas presented in the book series "Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know" and "The Schools We Need and Why We Don't Have Them" by E.D. Hirsch, Jr. These ideas were developed more by the Core Knowledge foundation that was established in 1986.

Core Knowledge is a nationally adopted curriculum that provides cultural literacy. Sequential learning can be broadened and built on to meet the learning and creative needs of the students as they succeed on to the next grade level. It includes the subjects of Literature, History, Geography, Social Studies, Science, Art, and Music. Each of these subjects also aid in the promotion of hands on learning experiences. The students not only learn cultural literacy through these studies, he or she will also build a strong vocabulary that is needed for reading comprehension. Our curriculum also includes:

  • Open Court Reading Program accompanied by Accelerated Reader
  • Teach Me Writing by SanRon
  • McGraw Hill Mathematics accompanied by Accelerated Math

Through certified instructors, we incorporate Physical Education into our schedules as well as an Art and Music Program. We also offer a "pull out" program for students who have tested gifted.

When it comes to technology, we feel it holds a strong importance in today's education. Therefore, Oakwood Academy offers computer education. Each student is assigned a laptop computer with internet access. Computer usage is incorporated into day-to-day learning instruction after initial computer instruction.

We also participate in the Brevard County Science Fair. It is a requirement of Oakwood Academy for each of our students to participate in the Fair. Completing a Science Fair project also promotes hands on learning in the area of science.

As a part of the Brevard County School of Choice Program, Oakwood Academy Charter School participates in testing programs mandated in accordance with the state and county.
